This trust is dedicated to Mrs. Laxmidevi Kamath, who left us on January 6, 2001. She always helped people, even if she had to lose something because of it. She told us that being independent is the most important thing in life. She suffered from diabetes and coronary disease for nearly 20 years but she maintained a strict diet regimen so that she would be independent until her death. She got her wish when she died instantly due to congestive heart failure. To realize her vision, we founded the trust in July, 2001 in Kaup, India.

Kaup is a coastal town in Karnataka State, India, consisting of 4 villages (Padu, Uliyargoli, Mallar and Majur) with a population exceeding 45,000. It is 13km south of Udupi ( a town famous for its ancient Krishna Temple) and 40kms north of Mangalore ( a port). It is famous for its lighthouse and the three Mariamma temples and a fort built by Tippu Sultan.

The goals we set, therefore, are the ones she would have set herself. The problems India currently faces (like corruption, epidemics) are largely due to ignorance and need to be nipped in the bud. If we educate children such that they develop a high moral sense and have good ethics, they make better citizens. Also, educating them to live better as a community and teaching them about good nutrition and hygiene will decrease the mortality rates.

We want to help children get education, especially the kind that provides them jobs in future. Currently we are sponsoring e-skool, a school that provides computer education. We believe that, by learning computer-related courses, children will have better opportunities to get scholarships and find jobs. We want the Indian children to be on par with the children from the developed countries and be able to compete at a global level.

We are running a web site, an e-magazine called http://indianink.net, that entertains, advises and provides information on issues related to Indian culture and brings people together. In addition we create and maintain web sites for selected non-profit web sites. This is our effort to help the communities address the problems they face (such as AIDS, teenage sex and drug problems) and try to resolve them.

In summer 2003, we will begin providing family and marriage counseling to the people in Kaup and surrounding towns and villages.
