Birlas share our problem - want inheritance

Author Subject: Birlas share our problem - want inheritance
Rohini Narla Posted At 14:42:43 07/15/2004
Priyamvada Birla passed away recently, leaving a 4-liner will donation all of the Birla assets to her accountant Mr. Lodha. This has shocked the Birla household. Some of them are trying to cut deals with Lodha while others are trying to fight the will in court because they "think" the Indian law says the assets of a family should not go to a non-family member (then why write a will?). This merely shows us that the pillars of business of India are not exceptions to human interests such as a share in their family assets.

I beg to differ. The Patriarch of the Birla fmilies produced a will written 15 years ago which states the assets should go to charity. Also he made a statement that NONE of the birla families want even a rupee from Priyamvada's $1.09 billion. They want it to go to chairty not Lodha. They are not in need of money. They are hurt because the money is going to a non-family member's personal benefits.

I never understand this "want to kep the money within the family". Whose money and who decides? If the matriarch was capable of taking care of her companies, she was also capable of perceiving relatives' greed! That's why she wrote her assets to a person she felt close to - Lodha. Just because rest of the blood relatives think he s an outsider, media should not encourgae it. If her will doesn't count to them that shows how much they care to fulfil her wishes! It is her money, her decision, period! I don't beleive a thing if they claim they want to give it to charity. They can consider giving it to Lodha itself is a charity.
